Eustace warns punters not to forget Dragon

WHILE the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes is billed a two-horse race between champion mare Verry Elleegant and rising star Incentivise, don’t forget about Sir Dragonet.

The Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained entire was an eye catching third behind Incentivise when resuming in the Makybe Diva Stakes and now gets to his pet distance of 2000m.

“He was very good firstup and it encouraging to see him return that way,” Eustace said.

“He came through it in good nick and has naturally improved from the run.

“He has had a couple of good gallops since then and he is ready to go up to a trip that will really suit him.

“Also, the likelihood of a rain-affected track will help his chances as well.

“We have great respect for both Verry Elleegant and Incentivise.

“Verry is probably the best horse in Australia at moment. She is most reliable horse in Australia at this level and turns up every time.

“But Sir Dragonet is a proven weight-for-age horse at the distance although whatever he does here, he will improve again and be spot on for the Cox Plate.

While Sir Dragonet is

number one contender this weekend, Maher and Eustace will also saddle up Explosive Jack Person in the weight-forage feature.

Both horses are on a Cups campaign and Eustace is realistic about their chances this weekend.

“We were delighted with Explosive Jack’s first-up run. He has come back very well,” he said.

“I expect will run well again here stepping up to 2000m but he will come into his own when he gets out to the mile and a half and further.

“Persan was also very good first-up. We didn’t plan to run him again before the Caulfield Cup but he had come through the run so well that we decided to give him another run and this is a nice a stepping stone to Caulfield.”
