Cosy cradle

The Sunday Mail (Queensland) - Escape - - FRONT PAGE -

Winter is the perfect time to take to the country’s cool mountain regions, where you can rent a little cabin, build a roaring log fire and seal yourself off from the rest of the world for a while. Whether alone, with your partner, with a family or with a group, it’s an escape to a simpler time. The mountain cabins at Cradle Mountain Highlanders Cottages (www.cradlehighlander.com.au or 03 6492 1116) in Tasmania are a textbook example. Each one is hidden away in bushland and hand-built from natural timber. The resort is on 4ha, just a minute’s drive from the entrance to the World Heritage-listed Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park. You may be content to relax in the cabin but there’s a cool, serene wilderness on your doorstep begging to be explored. There’s a winter special on until the end of August, Sundays to Thursdays, with a gourmet platter for two – including smoked salmon, pastrami and cheeses – and sparkling wine on the first night.

You also get a hearty breakfast hamper with supplies for your stay. It’s $360 a couple for two nights in a double cabin.
