RACING codes in Queensland officially are struggling to survive as police raids continue on dog trainers and Victoria declares war on horses backed to lose. Prewinter carnival mail bubbled about five-figure payouts from Asian betting agencies over wellfancied gallopers beaten in NSW. Assumption was Queensland and Victoria were next. Losses in Queensland were branded “unsustainable’’ in Racing Minister Bill Byrne’s “green’’ paper last week. The paper raised doubts about the “ongoing viability’’ of Racing Queensland, stakes levels, infrastructure projects, breeding and training track subsidies, starters’ rebates and how many of the state’s 300 annual non-TAB fixtures would survive.
