Kokky smothers blazing fire started by his good mate Kygrios
STAN Wawrinka was initially tense when Thanasi Kokkinakis approached him in a Cincinatti locker room but the pair have since cleared up any confusion in the wake of the infamous Nick Kygrios sledge and are on good terms.
Kokkinakis’ father Trevor told The Sunday Mail his son took it upon himself to approach Wawrinka and teenage Croatian women’s player Donna Vekic in person after Kygrios embroiled all of them in an international storm this month.
Courtside microphones picked up Kygrios telling Swiss star Wawrinka during a fiery encounter at the Montreal Masters that “Kokkinakis banged your girlfriend”.
Kokkinakis was relaxing in his hotel as he prepared for the Cincinatti Masters at the time but suddenly found himself caught up in the drama.
Trevor Kokkinakis said he was proud of the way his son had handled the controversy and said he got on the front foot and approached an initially frosty Wawrinka in the Cincinatti locker rooms.
“Stan initially misunderstood Thanasi’s role in this whole thing, and he was thinking ‘what is this kid about?’ until Thanasi set the record straight,’’ Kokkinakis Sr said. “Thanasi initiated the conversation which wasn’t an easy thing for a 19-year-old to do.
“Without getting too personal and lurid about the whole thing, he just wanted to assure Stan that there hadn’t been anything untoward between he and (Vekic).”
Wawrinka has been rumoured to be dating Vekic – a friend of Kokkinakis – since splitting with his wife in April.
Kokkinakis also spoke to Vekic when he bumped into her in Cincinatti.
“He just made sure she was OK and made sure she knew where he stood on the whole thing,’’ Kokkinakis Sr said.
“She and Stan both understand where Thanasi stands now and they’re fine with him.”
Kokkinakis Sr said the incident was emotionally draining on his son but he was “over it”.
