Liberals push former state candidate to run in Herbert
SENIOR Coalition figures are being asked to try to persuade a former LNP state candidate to nominate for preselection in the country’s most marginal federal seat.
Casie Scott is being pressured to run in Herbert against Labor’s Cathy O’Toole, who beat Ewen Jones by just 37 votes in 2016.
Ms Scott nearly defeated Townsville’s incumbent, Scott Stewart, at last year’s state election, losing by 160 votes. A senior Liberal source told
that there had been a “late, concerted effort” to get Ms Scott, who is popular among Townsville branch members, to nominate. But Ms Scott (pictured) would neither confirm nor deny on Thursday if she was going to nominate. If she did, Ms Scott would contest the preselection with Mr Jones, who understands is not popular among branch members and donors. “He’s got everyone offside,” a LNP source said. But Mr Jones said he had learned a lot from his loss and wanted another chance.
