RUN­NERS IN DESERT STORM

MOROCCO: More than 977 run­ners and walk­ers from around the world are tak­ing part in the 33rd Marathon Des Sables.

The an­nual six-day ul­tra-marathon, the name of which means Marathon of the Sands, is the world’s long­est foot race.

It con­sists of six reg­u­lar marathons across the Sa­hara Desert and is held over six days, with only one rest day.

The com­bined dis­tance is 254km, with the long­est stage 91km.

Par­tic­i­pants can run or walk but they must be com­pletely self-suf­fi­cient, car­ry­ing all their food and sleep­ing gear on their backs.
