Palaszczuk welcomes new bubs

The Sunday Mail (Queensland) - - NEWS -

POLITICIANS love kissing babies but Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has taken the ageold PR strategy to a new level.

Yesterday she marked the 10th anniversary of her attendance at the South West Progress Association’s “Welcoming The Babies” event, once again surrounded by dozens of gurgling bubs and proud parents.

The Durack State School event provides new arrivals a community citizenship ceremony, complete with jumping castles, lollies and face paint for them and their siblings.

The Premier, who has been the member for Inala since 2006, and former Brisbane City Councillor but now local federal MP, Milton Dick, decided 10 years ago to come along and say hello to their brand new constituents and get a picture taken.

The idea took off, and now there are thousands of photographs on Inala loungeroom walls testifying to the pair’s commitment.

The Premier sees it as one of her more enjoyable public engagements. Leigh Neven, from Westlake, agrees it’s a wonderful gesture and was only too happy to get a snap with the Premier and her oneyear-old James.

“It’s just a nice thing to do,” she said.
