Phelps throws hat in ring for PM’s blue-ribbon seat
HIGH-profile doctor, Kerryn Phelps, has been politically active for most of her career, but at 60-years-old is ready to enter Parliament in Malcolm Turnbull’s old seat of Wentworth.
The former Australian Medical Association President’s bid to be elected as an Independent in the wealthiest seat in the country comes at what she describes as a “critical moment in time for Australia” where voters are sick of the “political circus” engulfing parliament.
“This is a time for the Australian people to send a message to Canberra that they need to rethink the way politics is done,” she said. “They need to be thinking less about powerplays and factional backstabbing and more about what they’re there to do which is to manage the Australian economy and to display some heart.” The City of Sydney councillor (pictured) admits it will be tough to win, but says: “I’ve never been shy of a challenge.”
