Fa­tal flood hits again

AM­MAN: Flash floods killed nine peo­ple and forced tourists to seek higher ground in the an­cient city of Petra.

Dozens were hurt and more evac­u­ated in sev­eral lo­ca­tions as flood wa­ters rose rapidly.

Am­a­teur footage showed a tor­rent rush­ing through a nar­row canyon through which vis­i­tors reach the Trea­sury, the main at­trac­tion in Petra.

Au­thor­i­ties said two dozen peo­ple were in­jured and dozens more evac­u­ated as homes flooded in sev­eral lo­ca­tions.

The floods came just two weeks af­ter 21 peo­ple, many of them mid­dle-school stu­dents, died in a flash flood near the Jor­da­nian shore of the Dead Sea.

Au­thor­i­ties said more than 3600 tourists were vis­it­ing Petra yes­ter­day.
