Tassie double a
AT THEIR second attempt, Tasmania lifted the Origin Jockey Series trophy for the first time yesterday, thanks to a Craig Newitt double over the two days.
Newitt, who joined forces with Brendon McCoull, gave Tassie what proved to be an unassailable lead when he steered Sofie’s Gold Class home to win the Class 3 Plate (1600m) at Doomben yesterday.
Newitt also won on Cabin Fever at Doomben on Friday, helping Tassie to a series total of 19 points, giving them a onepoint win over New Zealand, with Victoria on 17.
“I’ve been lucky enough to ride a lot of Group 1 winners and some very good horses and even represent Australia, but there’s no better feeling than going back home and representing where I come from,” Newitt said. “It’s a big thrill to win a couple of races for Tassie.
“It’s an honour and privilege to represent your own state, especially in a competition like this with the greatest riders around the country. We really enjoyed it. I would like to thank Brendon, my team partner.
‘‘He’s been the local champion in Tasmania for a number of years now,” Newitt said.
The pair praised the Origin concept and said they would be back to defend their crown next year.
