Two fire­fight­ers die in Paris bak­ery gas blast

PARIS: A pow­er­ful ex­plo­sion ap­par­ently caused by a gas leak at a Paris bak­ery killed two fire­fight­ers and in­jured 47 oth­ers last night.

The blast blew w out win­dows and d over­turned cars s (pic­tured). Fire­fight­ers evac­u­ated lo­cals as smoke e bil­lowed over Rue e de Tre­vise in the e 9th ar­rondisse- ment of north- cen­tral Paris.

Pros­e­cu­tor Remy Heitz said the cause ap­peared to be an accidental gas leak.

He said Paris fire­fight­ers were already at the scene to in- ves­ti­gate a sus­pected gas leak at the bak­ery when the ex­plo­sion hap­pened. Wit­ness Pe­dro Gon­calves sa said: “In the midd dle of noth­ing, I heard one big ex­plo­sion and then a lot of pres­sure came at me (and) a lot of black smoke sm and glass.” An­other wit­ness feared it was a ter­ror at­tack. The bak­ery ba is around the cor­ner from the FoliesBerg­ere the­atre and not far from the shop­ping dis­trict that in­cludes the famed head­quar­ters of Ga­leries Lafayette.
