ANIMAL CRUELTY LAW MUST BE BALANCED
I refer to your story “Fur the love of dog” (SM, Apr 4).
There is a vast difference between, for example, mice and rats used in lifesaving scientific testing, and heartless acts of cruelty against pets and other animals.
The laws in relation to this important issue are under review for the first time in 20 years in Queensland.
It’s all well and good to be parading around with chic handbags that have the bold slogan “against animal testing”, but when the chips are down and it’s a “life and death” matter for scientific testing to discover the next breakthrough drug, I’m all for it. Let’s keep any changes to animal cruelty laws balanced and tempered with common sense. Rudolf Bojtschuk, Brisbane City
