FROM THE EDITOR

The Sunday Telegraph (Sydney) - Body and Soul - - B+S - – ELIN

I hate going to the dentist. Just thinking about having a check-up is enough to induce palpitations. And I’m not the only one – one in six Aussies suffers from high dental anxiety.

I’m not 100 per cent sure what triggered my fear. Maybe it was the locum who slipped and accidentally sliced the inside of my cheek when I was eight, or the time I was all blocked up from a cold and genuinely felt as if I might suffocate during an examination. Whatever it was, I’m now a bonafide dentophobe ( yes, that really is a ‘ thing’) and my teeth are paying the price – not to mention my wallet!

This week, we shine a spotlight on all things dental, from our pick of the best new at-home tech that promises happy gnashers ( page 10) to our report on why some bacteria are good for your mouth ( page 4). We also take a closer look at the cost of dental treatment. With 45 per cent of Aussie adults admitting that they avoid regular check-ups for fear of how much any subsequent treatment may cost, our feature on page 6 will arm you with all the questions you need to ensure you don’t get ripped off.

And if, like me, you’re terrified at the thought of visiting your dentist, turn to page 8, where we share expert tools to help you finally overcome your fear. Good luck!
