SISU

The Sunday Telegraph (Sydney) - Body and Soul - - NEWS -

Just when you thought you were running out of Scandi lifestyle trends, the Finns have introduced ‘sisu’. The term – which doesn’t have an exact translation in English – focuses on having grit, perseverance and courage in the face of challenges.

Finland recently topped the 2018 World Happiness Report and its residents have sisu to thank for it. Grounded in the idea that life is better when you just keep going, it’s the act of transforming setbacks into opportunities.

You can expect to see it plastered on every book in the self-help aisle soon, but if you’re keen to develop a little sisu on your own, start by setting yourself some everyday challenges. Stick with that morning surf despite the cooling weather, vow to cycle to work every day ( even if it rains), and smash out an extra burpee when you feel like giving up.
