THE QUEEN OF POP

Always take care with liquids in your luggage, warns Jessica Mauboy

The Sunday Telegraph (Sydney) - Escape - - HOW I PACK - AS TOLD TO PAUL EWART

With millions of records sold, a string of top 10 hits, and appearances on Ellen and Oprah, Jessica Mauboy is putting her travel experiences to the test for her greatest overseas journey so far – representing Australia in the annual Eurovision Song Contest.

MY PACKING STYLE IS …

Last minute! I’m pretty basic when I’m in holiday mode. If I was missing my togs, say, then I’d buy some. But for work, ooh, it’s a mission.

I PACK FOR A WORK TRIP BY …

Reading my schedule, which can sometimes arrive overnight – so I’ll often be packing and getting organised in the early hours.

I have a stylist who is also my best friend. Together we’ll work out the number of nights I’m on stage and plan the outfits together.

MY PACKING ESSENTIALS FOR EUROVISION INCLUDE …

My own make-up case as a back-up just in case my make-up artist loses hers.

MY LUGGAGE IS …

From Tumi. My carry-on and checkin are hard cases. Both have fluoro pink and green locks so I know which ones are mine on the carousel.

MY OUTFIT WHEN I TRAVEL …

Urban chic. I’ll wear something that won’t restrict me or be uncomfortable – a long dress or jeans – plus my Pumas or Van trainers and denim jacket. Once I’m on-board I’ll change into my PJs straight away. I love Qantas pyjamas.

I NEVER BOARD WITHOUT …

A little pillow in a silk case – antiwrinkle, darling! – and vitamins to help counteract any in-air bugs. I try to take care of my skin. I like to put on a face mask. I’m using one by Equal Beauty, which you can sleep in. I also use their serum and hydration spray when I’m on the plane.

A WASH BAG STAPLE …

Currently Chanel “Chance” perfume and Lanolips 101 Ointment – you can pretty much use it for anything, dry lips, sticky up hairs, eyelids … I love it.

MY TOP PACKING HACK …

Compartmentalise. I use different sections or cases for different things. My shoes go in one case with my hair and makeup stuff and in the other case are my stage outfits and personal clothes.

BIGGEST PACKING MISTAKE …

When my Christophe Robin conditioner leaked in my makeup bag. The top had popped open from the pressure – it was everywhere!

MY PACKING RESOLUTION IS …

To use strong warehouse tape over the tops of any oils or creams in my luggage so they don’t break open.

MY GO-TO TRAVEL APP IS …

Right now it’s Duo Lingo. I’m using it to learn some Portuguese for my Eurovision trip. So far I have the basics covered: “I want to eat” – which is very important! – and “hello” and “goodbye”. It’s always nice and respectful to learn a few words of the local language and I’m looking forward to mingling with the locals in Lisbon.

I MAKE A HOTEL ROOM FEEL LIKE HOME BY …

Taking candles. Ecoya do beautiful candles. I grew up camping and going out in the bush for weeks on end and candles remind me of all the bush fires we had during my childhood in Darwin. They really help to calm me.

PICTURE: ISTOCK

Jessica Mauboy is learning some Portuguese so she can mingle with Lisbon locals on her Eurovision trip.
