Follow the scent of fresh-baked biscuits through Perth’s favourite cultural hub late this month and you could find yourself at the door of a new hotel. Western Australia’s first DoubleTree by Hilton property is opening in James St, Northbridge. The location offers easy access to night-life and dining, but the 206-room hotel will have its own James St Bar + Kitchen, source of the hotel brand’s signature warm, chocolate chip cookies that welcome guests to about 540 DoubleTrees around the world. SWEET AS HONEY
Guests checking into Australia’s first hotel for new upscale brand Voco, now open in Surfers Paradise, are also greeted with a homemade biscuit. But this one is shortbread flavoured with honey harvested from Voco Gold Coast’s own bees. The onsite hives are part of the 389-room hotel’s sustainability focus, which includes working with Gold Coast City Council on recycling all kitchen waste. Of the more regular features, the hotel has three restaurants, two pools, a day spa and views of the sea and Gold Coast hinterland.
Other Voco hotels are in the works for the Yarra Valley and Melbourne CBD. VOCOHOTELS.COM
Travellers to Melbourne can experience the era of an American-style Art Deco hotel – check out those carpet motifs – now that Savoy Hotel on Little Collins has reopened. On the corner of Flinders Lane, over from Southern Cross station and most recently the Vibe Savoy Hotel, the building began life in 1928 as Hotel Alexander, the city’s first to advertise ensuites. The 2018 incarnation’s bathrooms have white subway tiles, black and white tiled floors and chrome taps, paying homage to the Art Deco heritage. TFEHOTELS.COM
