Achieve a faux glow with­out the fake tan­ner.

As the tem­per­a­ture rises, now is when many of us chase a faux glow. For those who would rather skip the self-tan­ner, fa­cial gloss­ing tech­niques can also be used on the body.

Start with a smooth base. “Ex­fo­li­a­tion is key to prepare the skin, and a hon­eyor su­gar-based scrub will buff limbs and mois­turise at the same time,” says make-up artist Shella Martin.

Next, find your for­mula. Whether you pre­fer a cream or oil, the best beau­ti­fiers com­bine emol­lients with ra­di­ance ingredients for skin that feels as good as it looks. “Healthy-look­ing skin is hy­drated skin, and creams can work like an all-over primer, as a foun­da­tion for body oil or you can layer colour­less and tinted body creams un­til you get your de­sired re­sult,” says Martin. “Mean­while oils of­fer in­tense sheen and can brighten, add warmth and blur im­per­fec­tions.” (A lit­tle face pow­der can tamp down ex­cess shine.)

Those with dry skin or scaly el­bows and knees might ben­e­fit from lay­er­ing oil on top of cream to help achieve even colour and lu­mi­nos­ity. “Be mind­ful to layer small amounts to en­sure a nat­u­ral­look­ing re­sult,” ad­vises Martin.

Now you’re ready to high­light. Use a flat brush to ap­ply ex­tra oil or cream on the col­lar­bones and shoul­ders, down the front of your legs and any­where else you want to spotlight.
