Kate Winslet stars in the title role in this mini-series adaptation of James M. Cain’s classic 1941 novel. Told over five episodes, the story follows the struggles of a divorcee battling to keep her family afloat during the Depression. She makes a success of her Los Angeles life, but her difficult relationship with her elder daughter Veda ( Morgan Turner, and later Evan Rachel Wood) is a great source of sorrow. Then there are the men in her life: her ex-husband Bert ( Brian F. O’Byrne) and her shallow poloplaying lover Monty ( Guy Pearce). The original film adaptation starred Joan Crawford as Mildred.
