DOWNTON ABBEY

Drama 8.30pm, Seven

The Sunday Telegraph (Sydney) - TV Guide - - SUNDAY HIGHLIGHTS - – DS

The penultimate episode of our favourite period drama has all the hallmarks of high drama – tears, tragedy, heartbreak, happiness and a goodly touch of overwrought soap.

Spanish flu casts a pall over Downton, and takes no account of privilege or poverty in its march. Leave it to Lady Violet ( Maggie Smith) to make the grim observation over dinner about “a masked ball in Paris when cholera broke out … half the guests were dead before they left the ballroom”. There’s a wedding, a funeral, and deliciously secret dealings behind closed doors.
