This series – which gave Downton Abbey a run for its money in the UK – continues to be captivating. It’s also racking up the numbers here on ABC.

Set in East London in the ’50s, it is based on the memoirs of Jennifer Worth – a district nurse raised amid wealth now working in a struggling, poverty-stricken community. Tonight Jenny (Jessica Raine) finds some perspective in a patient, Joe ( Roy Hudd), when she is put on a district nursing roster. Meeting Joe, an old soldier living in a bug-infested flat, is unexpectedly touching for Jenny.

Great casting, good script, beautiful sets and authentic costume designs – this reviewer is hooked.
