David Cronenberg peers inside London’s Russian Mafia and what he sees is fascinating.

Naomi Watts is Anna Khitrova, a midwife left holding the baby after a Russian teenager dies in childbirth.

Anna takes the girl’s journal to her uncle (Jerzy Skolimowski) to translate, hoping to find clues to the girl’s family. That leads her to a restaurant run by the seemingly benevolent Semyon (Armin Mueller-Stahl). His son Kirill ( Vincent Cassell) is the problem and his tattoed driver Nikolai ( Viggo Mortensen, nominated for an Academy Award) is the forbidden fruit. Or so it seems.
