Zack Sny­der’s $100 mil­lion-plus movie had an amaz­ing sub-plot – a court bat­tle over which stu­dio owned the rights to Alan Moore’s 1987 graphic novel, which had been through sev­eral screen in­car­na­tions be­fore start­ing pro­duc­tion. The film re­ceived mixed crit­i­cal no­tices, from “plod­ding, con­vo­luted and for­get­table” ( USA To­day) to “com­pelling … rich enough to be seen more than once” ( Chicago Sun-Times).
