Director Mike Nichols had a story so outrageous it had to be true and the dream pairing of Hollywood A-listers Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts. Nichols’ aim is usually spot on and he nailed this one, too. Charlie Wilson, who died in office in 2010, aged 78, was a 12-term Democratic Party congressman from Texas. Under the nose of the Reagan administration, he conspired with a renegade CIA agent Gust Avrakotos ( Phillip Seymour Hoffman) to appropriate billions of dollars to support the Afghan mujahideen against Soviet occupation.
