RAY BREAKS THE MOULD FOR NEW ROLE
LEGENDARY filmmaker Martin Scorsese asked “Ray who?” when the idea of casting ’90s sitcom star Ray Romano in his star-studded TV project Vinyl was first put to him. Romano’s sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond had somehow passed Scorsese by – a
blessing for the actor still trying to shake automatic association with the dad he played for nine years.
Almost unrecognisable as a shaggy-haired ’70s music executive – except for his unique voice – the role is set to provide the break from the past Romano’s been looking for.
Romano recalls how Scorsese’s casting agent told his agent the filmmaker had never heard of him. But the actor insists he wasn’t insulted.
“It ended up being the best thing,” Romano says. “Because he’s just looking at it clean. He doesn’t need to erase the preconceived stuff.”
Romano says his nine years on Everybody Loves Raymond has since been inextricably linked to how people view him as an actor.
“I did a couple of things after … but the majority of the public has not seen any of those,” he says. “So they’re going to go from here to there and that will be a huge difference. But I think that’s the goal.”
