PLAYING DOCTOR CHANGED CAPALDI

The Sunday Telegraph (Sydney) - TV Guide - - News -

PETER Capaldi was not prepared for the level of fame that came with assuming one of the most popular science-fiction roles in TV history.

Talking with TV Guide in London, ahead of his final season as Doctor Who’s Time Lord, Capaldi spoke of how the role had changed his life and the sadness he felt while filming his death scene.

On a recent trip to Australia, he was stunned the show had developed a cult-like appeal, which led to small crowds forming wherever he went.

“We had no idea that the show was historic in those countries … I’m thinking, ‘Wow I’m in Sydney’, and then I realise people are looking at me,” he says. “I’m thinking, ‘But there is an Opera House over there – surely they are looking over there’.”

Capaldi describes filming his death as “a strange day”. “It was explosive,” he says. “He goes out a fighter.

“It feels sad because you are going to say goodbye to everyone you worked with for years.”

There is no word yet on who will replace Capaldi in the iconic lead role. DOCTOR WHO SUNDAY, 7.40PM, ABC By Jack Houghton
