WEEK IN MOVIES NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM 2 KILL BILL: VOL. 2 GLADIATOR THE MEDDLER CHICAGO ARBITRAGE
WITH LEIGH PAATSCH MOULIN ROUGE!
2.55PM, FOXTEL MOVIES ROMANCE ★★★
Big, bold and brassy, musical Moulin Rouge! tells the doomed love story of an aspiring writer, Christian (Ewan McGregor) and a maneating dancehall diva, Satine (Nicole Kidman) in turnof-the-20th century-Paris. Director Baz Luhrmann’s stunning use of sets, props and costumes makes this an unforgettable cinematic experience.
It’s been three years since the exhibits of New York’s Museum of Natural History first came to life. Now, night watch man-turnedbusiness man Larry Daley (Ben Stiller) is tasked with rescuing his old mates Teddy Roosevelt (Robin Williams) and Jedediah Smith (Owen Wilson), and their friends from storage at Washington’s Smithsonian Museum.
When we last parted company with wronged female assassin The Bride (Uma Thurman), it was a case of “two down, three to go’’ in her quest to eradicate the hit squad which killed her fiance and unborn child in Vol.1. Master writer-director Quentin Tarantino has toned down the gore here, but that is not to say the sequel is any less exciting.
Where does one start in describing the greatness of this movie? Ridley Scott’s historical epic Gladiator charts the many mountainous ups and downs in the life of Maximus (Russell Crowe), the former leader of the Roman Army. Maximus plummets from potential ruler to slave, thanks to the conniving of a new emperor, Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix).
Susan Sarandon plays a recent widow named Marnie who moves from New Jersey to LA to be closer to her only child Lori (Australia’s Rose Byrne). Now she is residing at close range, Marnie can devote every waking moment to relentlessly bombarding her scriptwriter daughter with text messages, voicemails and unannounced drop-ins.
A rousing rendition of the hit stage musical. The star pairing of Renée Zellweger and Catherine Zeta-Jones as duelling homicidal hoofers from the jazz era is tremendous, with added oomph from Richard Gere as their showboating lawyer. Expect a jam-packed line-up of genuine show-stoppers.
Robert Miller (Richard Gere) is a “wizard of Wall Street’’ with a secret $400 million hole in his books. He’s trying to keep up appearances despite repeated visits from a very agitated detective after he is implicated in the death of an artist. A ripping tale of high finance and low ethics.
Spectacular: Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor star in MoulinRouge.
