WEEK IN MOVIES

The Sunday Telegraph (Sydney) - TV Guide - - News - WITH LEIGH PAATSCH

SUNDAY BOWLING FOR COLUMBINE 8.30PM, SBS ★★★★

This hell-raising and heartbreaking doco is a stinging indictment of American society’s obsession with its right to bear arms. Irrationally, incisive investigative journalism which entertains as it informs. Interestingly, Kmart in the US stopped selling ammunition after Michael Moore took his cameras to their corporate HQ.

MONDAY SING 7.30PM, FOXTEL’S FAMILY ★★★

Along with La La Land and Moana, this was another lively movie musical offering from 2016. Buster Moon (Matthew McConaughey) is a theatre owner who has fallen on hard times. A koala with an American accent, his bright idea to save the day is to stage a singing contest for all comers, allowing for a set list of one catchy cover after another.

TUESDAY HORRIBLE BOSSES 2 8.30PM, 7FLIX ★★

After buddies Nick (Jason Bateman), Dale (Charlie Day) and Kurt (Jason Sudeikis) conspired to murder their employers, the boys return to forge a business together. When their first deal backfires, they hatch a plan to extort a wealthy tycoon by kidnapping his son. Co-stars Kevin Spacey, Jamie Foxx and Jennifer Aniston.

WEDNESDAY THE BOOK OF ELI 9PM, 9GO! ★★★

A pulpy, post-apocalyptic thriller pitches a well-cast Denzel Washington as a defiant nomad who happens to own the last Bible on a nuke-ravaged Earth. A notso-religious Gary Oldman wants to have a read, and will kill for the privilege. Perfect for action fans.

THURSDAY SNOWDEN 1.10PM, FOXTEL’S MASTERPIECE ★★

An uneven biopic of one of recent history’s most fascinating figures. In 2013, former CIA operative Edward Snowden (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) leaked a blizzard of secret documents exposing the US government’s widespread surveillance of its own citizens (and a fair whack of the rest of the world, too).

FRIDAY JASON BOURNE 12.35PM, ACTION/ADVENTURE ★★★

Temperatures are rising at political hotspots all over Europe. Big data is screwing the little guy. The US feds are getting carried away with thuggishly policing the western world. The perfect time for famed amnesiac assassin Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) to make his return. Co-stars Alicia Vikander.

SATURDAY ANIMAL KINGDOM 11.20PM, SBS VICELAND ★★★★

A gritty, highly atmospheric crime drama that makes the Underbelly TV franchise look like a grotesque cartoon. Animal Kingdom is sure to leave viewers both impressed and distressed by what they see. A brilliant ensemble cast is headed by Ben Mendelsohn and an Oscarnominated Jacki Weaver.

Catchy: Matthew McConaughey voices Buster the koala in Sing.
