HOW do you survive when you’re a frumpy Texas teen (Danielle Macdonald) but your mum (Jennifer Aniston, pictured) is a former small town beauty queen? This is Willdowdean Dickson’s uncomfortable reality – so she decides to join the pageant to make a very painful protest. With hints of Muriel’s Wedding and Toni Collette’s portrayal of small-town misfit, Muriel, who relies on Abba songs to get by, Willowdean finds her succour in Dolly Parton hits and a bar of helpful drag queens (cue Priscilla: Queen of the Desert reference) as her performance mentors. A feelgood, coming-of-age flick that touts the ugly duckling message with entertaining alacrity.
