THEY say that Victorian country town Beaufort is between the two “rats” – that’d be Ballarat and Ararat. Some people know it for an electronic dance festival held on a farm, others as the birthplace of the man who invented Vegemite. And if you ever wondered what happened to ’90s musician Max Sharam (pictured), who had the hit Coma, well, she’s back living in her hometown Beaufort and is on a crusade to save the town’s historic buildings. That includes a primary school that dates back to 1863, the oldest surviving school of its type in Victoria. However, the town is at a crossroads, as the main street is about to be bypassed by traffic that’s kept the town alive.
