THANKS to TheCrown and our new obsession with the young royals, it would seem impossible to reveal something the modern monarchist doesn’t know about Queen Elizabeth II and her clan. Yet this film about her predecessor, Victoria (Dame Judi Dench, pictured), was absolutely fascinating, turning a spotlight on the little-known relationship between the queen and Abdul Karim, an Indian clerk summoned to the royal court from the sub-continent, who would become her confidante and ‘Munshi’ (teacher). Eddie Izzard plays Bertie, the bad-mannered heir, who waits impatiently for his ascension to the throne and feels threatened by his mother’s unusual companion.
