A FRESH TAKE ON HUGO’S CLASSIC

The Sunday Telegraph (Sydney) - TV Guide - - Front Page -

FOR those who loathe musicals (like our cover star Dominic West), the good news is there’s no warbling in this one. Instead, it relies on the remarkable acting talents and a lush production to tell the epic tale of Victor Hugo’s literary classic

Pound for pound, it’s one of the strongest ensembles I’ve seen on screen in many a year, with West playing Jean Valjean; Golden Globe winner David Oyelowo as his prison nemesis Javert; Oscar queen Olivia Colman ( in the innkeeper Hathaway her Academy Award for best supporting actress. The staging and scale is breathtaking and once you can leave behind comparisons to the all-singing version which starred our Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe, it’s truly excellent TV.

It is also more faithful to the text and allows for greater character development over six episodes. For those with those enormous, mega-pixel home theatre screens this will be a cinematic experience you can get lost in.
