Obama dishes up dirt on ‘ crap’ meals US serves to schoolkids

The Sunday Telegraph (Sydney) - - WORLD -

MICHELLE Obama has spoken about her future plans, saying she and former president Barack Obama were just taking a breather while they figured out their next steps.

The Obamas have begun to re-emerge in public since leaving the White House.

Addressing a health conference in Washington, Mrs Obama said the couple were settling into their new home and offices in Washington and making sure daughters Malia and Sasha were doing well.

She said they also have books to write and money to raise for the presidential centre they plan to build on the South Side of her native Chicago. “We’re not gone. We’re just breathing,” she said.

Mrs Obama also lashed out at the Trump administration’s decision to delay federal rules aimed at making school lunch healthier, saying kids will end up “eating crap” instead.

She said more nutritionally sound school meals were needed since millions of kids eat federally subsidised breakfast and lunch at school.

Without mentioning Donald Trump by name, she urged parents to think about the government’s recent decision and to “look at motives”.

“You have to stop and think: ‘Why don’t you want our kids to have good food at school? What is wrong with you and why is that a partisan issue?’ Why would that be political?” Mrs Obama said.

“Moms, think about this. I don’t care what state you live in, take me out of the equation, like me, don’t like me, but think about why someone (Trump) is OK with your kids eating crap.”
