THOMPSON’S CLEAN SLATE

The Sunday Telegraph (Sydney) - - RACING -

ROBERT Thompson, the nation’s “winningest” jockey with 4275 wins, turned 59 yesterday and shows no signs of stopping. .

Thompson’s record of wins is remarkable but what is often overlooked is the Hall of Fame jockey’s ability to ride fairly and cleanly.

In fact, Thompson has gone a decade without suspension — that is an estimated 8000 rides without raising the ire of stewards. Scone chief steward

Shane Cullen even remembers the last time Thompson was suspended — because he issued the penalty.

“It was at Gunnedah on Robert’s birthday exactly 10 year ago,’’ Cullen recalled. “When they talk of the great jockeys like Beadman,

Quinton and Cook, I would be amazed if Robert Thompson isn’t in the top seven or eight.’’
