Country wants more biff
COUNTRY councils are rising up against the “shiny suit people” from city, accusing them of abandoning rugby league in the bush.
Mid-Western Regional Council is calling on other non-Sydney councils to help bring back the traditional City-Country match.
The 106-year-old tradition was scrapped by the NRL because of complaints from coaches.
Mid-Western Regional Council councillor Percy Thompson, who raised the motion last month, said the event was vital for the bush.
“The shiny suit people do not understand how important the game has been for rugby league over the years,” he said.
A spokesman for the NRL said they aim to take more games in general to country areas.
