Tagataese: Stage set for Holmes to shine

The Sunday Telegraph (Sydney) - - SPORT -

CRONULLA prop Sam Tagataese has tipped club teammate Valentine Holmes to take his frustrations out on the Blues in his Origin debut for Queensland on Wednesday night.

Tagataese says it’s crazy Holmes has represented his country before his state and predicts the 22-year-old flyer would use his Origin I snubbing to prove the selectors wrong.

“I think he conducted himself well and the performances he has put on for us at the Sharks in the last couple of weeks have been outstanding,” Tagataese said. “To me, I don’t understand how you get picked for your country, but you get overlooked for your state.

“I think he deserves to be there in Origin, because if you are good enough to play for your country you are good enough to play for your state.

“I can see where Queensland was going and rewarding and being loyal, but in hindsight as well you’ve got to pick on performance. I’m happy for Val that he is playing there now. It’s a big stage and I reckon he’ll live up to the moment.”
