Bookies keep Moss cash

The Sunday Telegraph (Sydney) - - RACING - BRAD DAVIDSON

THE bookies breathed a sigh of relief yesterday after the best-backed horse around the country went down in a photo finish at Rosehill Gardens.

Moss ’N’ Dale ($5 to $2.30) was heavily backed with the TAB in early betting and looked set to reward punters until Liapari dived late to win the TAB Rewards Handicap (1500m) by a short-half-head.

Moss ’N’ Dale’s trainer Peter Gelagotis said the jury was out on his galloper after his close second. “I don’t know what to make of it,” he said.

“The odds reflected he had a solid handle on the race but in saying that the jury is out for mine. Does he need it a bit wetter? Maybe.’’

Liapari caught the eye of trial watchers on Tuesday and didn’t disappoint to claim his fourth Sydney win since arriving from New Zealand last year.

“He needs all of the 1500m but believe it or not once he gets past 1600m he struggles so there is a trick to him,” Liapari’s trainer Chris Waller said.

“He will just keep (contesting) these types of races.

“He has been a pretty unlucky horse and has won a few good races but if we can win another one or two that would (be lovely).”
