Shot Congressman making full recovery

The Sunday Telegraph (Sydney) - - WORLD -

US Congressman Steve Scalise can hope to make an “excellent recovery,” his trauma surgeon has declared, even though the politician arrived at the hospital at imminent risk of death after being shot at baseball practice.

In his first public comments since the shooting, Dr Jack Sava of MedStar Washington Hospital Centre, said it was a “good possibility” that the Louisiana Republican will be able to return to work in his full capacity.

Dr Sava declined to put a timeline on when that would happen or when Mr Scalise, 51, would be able to leave the hospital.

The doctor described how a bullet from an assault rifle ent- ered Scalise’s hip and traversed his pelvis, shattering blood vessels, bones and internal organs.

Mr Scalise remains in a critical condition in intensive care.

He was wounded when gunman James Hodgkinson opened fire at a baseball practice for Republican politicians on Wednesday morning. Police shot and killed the gunman.
