It’s Bondi’s last castle
Mansion saved from units
IN a shocking development — or, more accurately, no development — an 1880s colonial estate that became an island in a sea of Bondi apartment towers will stay as a family home.
Until this week owner Bill Shires was sure the heritagelisted, eight-bedroom Barroda at 1 Ocean St would meet the same fate as every other surrounding house.
“Anything’s possible with the right plans — it’s zoned for eight storeys high, with views of the beach and harbour and it’s close to everything,” he said.
Instead it sold to the Day family, who paid $4.2 million via McGrath agent Simon Exleton to make it a multigenerational home ahead of Thursday’s scheduled auction.
Architect Michael Day, with sons Anatole and celebrity agent Titus, came out on top of a three-way battle for the mansion.
“It’s perfect,” Mr Day said. “Two of my y sons had been talking ng about leaving Sydney y because of the high property operty prices and cost of living. ng. But I’m going to sell my two properties — and they can sell theirs — and we’ll pool our resources together and create one big family home.”
Mr Day plans to convert the garage into a separate cottage, leaving the main house for Titus, wife Courtney and their three children.
Anatole is still planning to move out of Sydney but will commute for work and spend two or three nights a week in the new home. “His wife and
daughter can come down — it’s a way of keeping the family together,” Mr Day said.
Titus, whose clients include Sophie Monk and Grant Denyer, agreed: “It’s very exciting. We’ve talked about it for a long time because we’re a pretty close family. A lot of European communities do it, looking after each other as they grow old.” Mr Day thinks developers put the property in the too-hard basket. “They would have had a bit of a fight with the local heritage officer to knock it down,” he said. The Days will be the home’s third owners.
