Per­haps what Tony Ab­bott and Peta Credlin haven’t yet re­alised is that the “con­ser­va­tive base” is a dwin­dling con­cept (Peta Credlin: “Coali­tion’s worst week ... so far”, 25/2).

You just have to look at the SSM vote to fig­ure that out. Aus­tralians are gen­er­ous, open and pro­gres­sive and they can’t stand liars or hyp­ocrites, which is why two-thirds of Aus­tralia thought the sec­ond best re­tail politi­cian should go. If I was the first best re­tail politi­cian in Aus­tralia, I’d be spend­ing a good amount of time get­ting to know my own elec­torate again.
