Ornate Hunters Hill mansion awaits returning ambassador Hockey

The Sunday Telegraph (Sydney) - - REALESTATE -

THE H Hunters Hill peninsulaba based Boyd family has been p pinpointed as the likely buyers of Te Roma, the home of Joe Hockey, the ambassador to the United S States, and his investment ba banker wife, Melissa Babba Babbage. Agent Brad Pillinger had hoped Chinese New Year tourism would bring offshore interest, but the rumoured strongest interest came from the downsizing local family.

Hockey and Babbage intend to upsize to another historic Hunters Hill home set on almost 2400sqm.

The pair has secured a reputed $8 million deal for Wybalena House (pictured), a grand six-bedroom 1870s residence. The deal was secured via a put and call option last month when a call-option fee was paid and released.

Their redundant 1905 Federation property came down from websites on Friday. There was no official sale confirmation, but no further open for inspections are scheduled for the 1400sqm property which cost $3.5 million in 2004 and was listed with $8 million price guidance.

Observers suggest Hockey had been caught in cooling market conditions, as the torrent of billionaire buyers from China has turned to a trickle.

The property bought by Joe Hockey (inset).
