A GRANDMOTHER whose dog mauled a one-year-old girl to death could be charged, despite the pet being tied up at the time.

Police have ruled out earlier reports the dog jumped a fence before attacking, and that Kamillah Jones was in a pram.

Instead, police said the one-year-old was playing in the backyard of her new home last Saturday afternoon when the pet rottweiler attacked her.

Her grandmother had arrived at the house earlier in the day to help the family move in after they had relocated from another property in Inverell.

Police believe a number of people had gathered at the Greaves St home in the afternoon when the dog attacked.

Paramedics rushed to the home just after 2pm and found Kamillah with critical injur- ies. She died in the back of an ambulance on the way to hospital.

Council rangers took the dog from the property and kept the animal in a pound until it was put down this week.

Police are still trying to establish exactly how the baby was so close to the canine and why the animal attacked.

“If there are to be any charges laid it will be after the brief has been prepared for the coroner,” Chief Inspector Rowan O’Brien said.
