Birth of politically correct certificates

The Sunday Telegraph (Sydney) - - NEWS - LINDA SILMALIS

IN WHAT is either a helping hand for multiculturalism or the stifling hand of political correctness, birth certificates in NSW are about to offer handprints in a variety of shades.

The NSW Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages will now be offering four new hand colours as part of an overhaul of its themed birth certificates.

The move follows calls from parents wanting skin shades other than “white”, with the changes being implemented after consultation with religious and community leaders together with the Diversity Services unit within the Department of Justice.

Department Registrar Amanda Ianna said the “white” hand was the most popular themed birth certificate of the selection, making up around one- third of sales. “It was introduced about 10 years ago and is our highest selling commemorative design,” Ms Ianna said.

“The new designs are more inclusive and reflect our multicultural society.”

The additions are among new options for a decorative birth certificate, including designs May Gibbs, Ken Done, State of Origin Blues and Maroons and two different Bananas In Pyjamas designs.
