Our ‘ lost’ children

The Sunday Telegraph (Sydney) - - NEWS -

MORE than 3000 children under the age of five in NSW have no official identity because their parents failed to obtain a birth certificate.

Despite their births being documented by local hospitals, the lack of a record with NSW Registry of Births Deaths and Marriages means they are effectively “off the books”, or legally invisible.

The vast majority of these children are from the indigenous community, which is the target of a statewide campaign to be launched today to encourage parents to register their children.
