A queen and three future kings watch a prince in love

FOUR GENERATIONS OF BRITISH ROYALTY, FROM MODERN BLUE BLOODS TO A HISTORYMAKING MONARCH FILLED THE ST GEORGE’S CHAPEL PEWS, REPORTS ANNETTE SHARP

The Sunday Telegraph (Sydney) - - HARRY & MEGHAN -

WHILE the bride’s fractured American family were conspicuous by their absence inside the cramped confines of St George’s Chapel, the groom’s blueblood Windsor clan filled row after row of pews.

Four generations of royals attended the wedding of the sixth in line to the British throne, presided over by the oldest and longest reigning British monarch, 92-year-old Queen Elizabeth and husband Prince Philip, 96.

As expected, the future King of England, Prince Charles dutifully escorted the bride down the aisle after her father, Thomas Markle, pulled out at the last minute due to poor health.

Among those in the groom’s extended family were Princess Anne and her husband Vice Admiral Timothy Laurence, a Royal Navy commander, and the princess’s two children from her first marriage to Captain Mark Phillips; Peter Phillips — with wife Autumn — and the heavily pregnant Zara Tindall, on the arm of her retired English rugby player husband Mike Tindall.

The Queen’s rarely sighted youngest child, Prince Edward, and his wife Sophie, Countess of Wessex, and their two children Lady Louise Windsor and James, Viscount Severn received a warm welcome from revellers.

Despite reports she would be snubbed, Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, attended the ceremony though she was not invited to arrive along with the royal party, which included her ex-husband Prince Andrew and daughters Beatrice, 29, and Eugenie, 28.

The groom’s mother Princess Diana’s family were represented by her brother Charles, 9th Earl Spencer, his wife Countess Karen and their daughter Lady Kitty Spencer. The late princess’s two sisters, Lady Sarah McCorquodale and Lady Jane Fellowes, were also present.

Charles’ wife Camilla’s children from her first marriage to Andrew Parker Bowles, Tom Parker Bowles and his sister Laura Lopes, joined guests.

Kate Middleton’s parents, Carole and Michael Middleton, and sister Pippa, with husband James Matthews, also celebrated the union.

Kate was happy to take a back seat while the next king after Charles, William, was in the spotlight as best man and his son, Prince George, the king to follow him, was a pageboy.

And among the princes and dukes and duchesses was the only member of Meghan’s family to attend; her devoted mum, 61-year-old social worker and yoga instructor Doria Ragland.

MUM’S THE WORD Mother of the bride Doria Ragland was a great support to her daughter in the tumultuous lead-up to the wedding. She looked elegant in an embroidered light-green dress and coat.

I’LL BE NEXT In six months Princess Eugenie (centre) will have her turn walking down the aisle, to marry Jack Brooksbank (right). Princess Beatrice (left) is expected to be a great support for her sister.

FAMILY TIES The Middleton family of Catherine, Duchess of York, were invited, including her sister Pippa and husband James Matthews.
