Suspicious fire at a historic school
THE fire that tore through a historic Parramatta Public School building yesterday, forcing 300 residents to be evacuated from nearby apartments, is being treated as suspicious by police.
Emergency services were called about 4.40am on Saturday to the two-storey heritage brick building on Macquarie Street. About 75 firefighters and 19 trucks fought to prevent the blaze from spreading to surrounding buildings.
The building is still standing but suffered severe damage.
The cause of the fire is unknown and it will take some time for investigators to determine how it began.
The building is part of a $220 million development project.
Firefighters battle the blaze.
