Sus­pi­cious fire at a his­toric school

THE fire that tore through a his­toric Par­ra­matta Pub­lic School build­ing yes­ter­day, forc­ing 300 res­i­dents to be evac­u­ated from nearby apart­ments, is be­ing treated as sus­pi­cious by po­lice.

Emer­gency ser­vices were called about 4.40am on Satur­day to the two-storey her­itage brick build­ing on Mac­quarie Street. About 75 fire­fight­ers and 19 trucks fought to pre­vent the blaze from spread­ing to sur­round­ing build­ings.

The build­ing is still stand­ing but suf­fered se­vere dam­age.

The cause of the fire is un­known and it will take some time for in­ves­ti­ga­tors to de­ter­mine how it be­gan.

The build­ing is part of a $220 mil­lion devel­op­ment pro­ject.
