‘Potts Point going up’
A DAY after launching the Australian franchise of a US bootcamp with a cult follow
ing that includes celebs like Kim Kardashian, Westmeadborn 32-year-old Heston Russell bought a Potts Point apartment for $790,000.
“Potts Point is going up, up, up … and we’d like to open up one of our studios here,” the Barry’s Bootcamp head of operations said.
Laing and Simmons Potts Point agent Nuri Shik had six register to bid for the tiny 36 sqm one-bedder at 501/19-33
Bayswater Rd, all enthused about the huge 96sqm northfacing terrace with city views.
But just four managed to get a bid in. Standing with partner Blake Bridges, 29, Mr Russell, who once worked with the military at Holsworthy, opened the bidding at $650,000. $650 000 Bidding then rose quickly in $10,000 and $5000 increments.
The result was $40,000 above reserve, a strong result in which many properties are passing in or being withdrawn before auction.
“It went over the reserve so I’m happy,” said vendor Troy Wilkie, a presenter on Luxury Homes Revealed on Channel 9’s free-to-air Channel 9 Life. He bought it for $400,000 $400 000 in 2014 and imm- imm ediately rolled out artificial lawn and pots with huge magnolias on the terrace.
“It had been like Soviet Russia — with all the terracotta tiles it was so bare, hot and awful,” Mr Wilkie said.
He spent $150,000 on renovations. The copper piping and black paint created a “masculine” look. It had been the perfect bachelor pad for Mr Wilkie but then he met his girlfriend, Magdalena Iegowska, and they’ve moved to the inner west with their two greyhounds.
Mr Heston and Mr Bridges love the fit-out. Mr Heston declared it “perfect” for them. “It’s the right blend of chic and simple yet functional,” he said. The price was $10,000 over what they’d budgeted for, “which wasn’t too much”.
The couple met in Los Angeles last year when Mr Bridges worked at Barry’s Bootcamp in West Hollywood. “We decided to acquire the franchise rights to set up Barry’s Bootcamp in Australia,” Mr Heston said.
News Corp on Friday revealed Barry’s will open studios in Surry Hills, Martin Place and a third Sydney location in September, then in Melbourne early next year.
