DU­BI­OUS over­came a tough run to smash the race record and make rac­ing history at Royal Rand­wick yes­ter­day.

Trained at Caulfield by Ciaron Ma­her and David Eus­tace, Du­bi­ous is be­lieved to be the first Mel­bourne young­ster to win the Group 3 $160,000 Breed­ers’ Plate (1000m).

“It’s great to win. If it’s history that is even bet­ter,’’ Ma­her said.

The Breed­ers’ Plate is the open­ing two-year-old race for colts and geld­ings in Syd­ney each sea­son.

It was first run in 1906 and has been won by some out­stand­ing young­sters.

But Du­bi­ous is be­lieved to be the first Mel­bourne-trained two-year-old to win the race and he did so in a bril­liant
