56.45sec, the fastest time recorded for the race, albeit assisted by a strong tailwind.

Maher said Dubious has been the stable’s “most precocious colt” this season.

“Shane McGrath from Aquis mentioned the idea,’’ Maher said. “It’s a stallionmaking race and that is what we aim to do with this horse. He’s started his career very well.’’

Dubious ($19) drew wide and never got near the inside rail but finished fast to collar Covert Ops ($11) to win by a short head with Krameric ($7) 1½ lengths away third.

Winning rider Michael Walker said Dubious was “strong to the line”.

“He’s only a little horse but has a big horse’s action,’’ Walker said.

“The further he goes the better he is going to get,’’ Walker said.
