Maximus ends run of favourites

The Sunday Telegraph (Sydney) - - RACING - RAY THOMAS

TEAM Snowden was able to bookend the Epsom Handicap meeting when Maximus won the closer at Royal Randwick yesterday.

Maximus, brilliantly ridden by Tommy Berry, sped through along the rails to win the Snitzel Handicap (1200m).

It complemented the win of stablemate Catch Me in the Group 3 Gimcrack Stakes to start the day.

Maximus ($5) didn’t go around a horse as he dived through to score by 1½ lengths from Right Or Wrong ($7.50) with Problem Solver ($6.50) a luckless third.

“After Maximus ran second the other day, Peter (Snowden) said the horse may need further and a dry track,’’ Berry said.

“He got that today and was too good for them.’’

The win of Maximus ended the winning streak of favourites in the final race at Sydney Saturday meetings.

Coruscate ($3.80) was attempting to become the 10th favourite in succession to win the last on the program but he was never on the track from a wide barrier and struggled to finish seventh.
