Phillips opens up on anxiety

The Sunday Telegraph (Sydney) - - INSIDER -

ABC News presenter Juanita Phillips has revealed her long running battle with anxiety and opened up about the moment she had an on-air breakdown. Speaking to promote the cause of Anxiety Awareness Month, the 54-year-old has told her story in a bid to help others struggling with the often debilitating illness.

“Looking back, I’ve probably experienced anxiety my whole life,” Phillips (pictured) told Marie Claire magazine, on sale Thursday.

“I grew up in a tense household and I can remember my mum taking me to see doctors when I was 10 because I had lots of stomach pains. No one could ever find anything wrong, but I now recognise that as one of the symptoms of my anxiety.”

The popular journalist said the breakdown of her marriage triggered an overwhelming anxiety attack over a decade ago.

“In 2007, I basically had an on-air breakdown where my throat closed up and I felt like I couldn’t breathe,” she said. “That was when I first embraced yoga. I realised I needed to do something to take care of my mental health and it was transformative.”
